The Chills, and growing up in northern Sweden.

When your subject looks like he’s on a heavy dose of downers, ditch the prepared questions
and get him enthusing about the music he loves. Musicians are often lay musicologists and
our boy Beck has some interesting theories.

Recorded backstage at a mammoth venue in Salt Lake City, Utah on May 3, 2000. Originally
broadcast on KRCL 90.9FM’s Monday Drive program on May 8, 2000. Interview by Stuart

The first musical guest i welcomed onto my Monday Drive Time radio show on KRCL,
90.9 in Salt Lake City, Utah was Kelly Joe Phelps. As well as having a chin wag about
all kinds of musical topics, he was gracious to play a couple of tunes off his (then) latest
release, Shine Eyed Mr. Zen. They are House Carpenter and Hobo’s Son. This session
was recorded on April 17, 2000 at the old KRCL station headquarters in downtown SLC.
